Kayondo Charles's Story

Kayondo Charles is 13 years old. He was born with hydrocephalus — a build-up of fluid around the brain that needs lifelong medical monitoring and care. With his family’s full consent, Friends of Bukomansimbi is sharing his story so that his treatment can continue without interruption.

Charles’s condition means regular hospital visits, prescribed medication, and a carefully managed diet. His parents estimate transport and medication at roughly UGX 340,000 a month, plus about UGX 100,000 a month for the nutrient-rich food — fish, meat, rice and fruit — that his treatment plan requires. Altogether, keeping his care on track costs the family roughly UGX 400,000 (about US $120) every month, which is simply beyond what they can manage alone.

Urgent Causes

FAQ

What is hydrocephalus?

– Hydrocephalus is a build-up of fluid within the brain. It is a lifelong condition that needs regular monitoring, medication, and consistent access to healthcare to manage safely.

Why does Charles need a year-long fund rather than a single donation?

– His care is not a one-off cost — it is an ongoing monthly need for transport, medication and specialised food. A 12-month goal lets Friends of Bukomansimbi release funds steadily each month, rather than his family having to ask again and again.

How will my donation be used?

– Funds go directly toward Charles’s transport to hospital, his prescribed medication, and the nutrient-rich food his treatment plan calls for. Friends of Bukomansimbi coordinates directly with his family to cover these costs each month.

Is this connected to the Back to School Drive?

– No — this campaign is separate and dedicated solely to Charles’s medical needs. The Back to School Drive supports school-related costs for children in our care.

Can I give once, or set up a recurring gift?

– Both are welcome. You can make a single donation toward the 12-month goal, or give what you can on a regular basis — every contribution helps keep Charles’s care on track.

Who verified Charles's diagnosis?

– Charles’s diagnosis and ongoing needs are documented by his treating doctor. With his family’s permission, we have shared his doctor’s note on this page so donors can see exactly what his care involves.

Will I know how the funds are used?

– Yes. We will post updates on this page as the campaign progresses, and you are always welcome to contact Friends of Bukomansimbi directly for the latest on Charles’s care.

What happens if the goal isn't fully reached?

– Every shilling raised goes toward Charles’s care, whatever the total. If we fall short of the full 12-month goal, we will use what is raised to cover as many months as possible and keep fundraising for the rest.
